FC Augsburg managed to secure a vital 2-1 victory over 1. FC Köln at home. A tense final few minutes was made all the more nail-biting after two sending offs left FCA with nine men on the pitch. We bring you all the post-match reaction here.
Daniel Baier: “We battled from the first minute right until the last. This level of performance has to be what we expect from ourselves in the next few games. We showed huge desire and we also played some brilliant football. We need to keep on doing that. It was a heated game that will give us a lot of energy and confidence.”
Kevin Danso: “We were together the entire week and wanted to give something back to the fans for their support. We threw everything at it and got a deserved victory as a result¬. Now we need to take this momentum forward with us into the next game.”
Philipp Max: “We wanted to put a stop to our negative run of form. We were obviously happy to finally take the lead and we got our tactics absolutely right. In the end it was close again but all that matters is that we got the win.”
Martin Hinteregger: “Taking the lead was extremely important for our confidence. We were especially good in the first half and we defended hard after the break. Talking to the fans beforehand had really motivated us again and we wanted to reward them with something for their support. The atmosphere was great today. It was definitely the most emotional and best match that I’ve experienced here. This victory was for the fans.”
Paul Verhaegh: “We started well, got the goal and built on that. Köln were better after the break but it was just pure battling from us to stay up. With six minutes of stoppage time and two men down, it was important that we held out. Everyone showed incredible desire, our fans were fantastic and supported us brilliantly. Now we need to play like that every week.”
Manuel Baum: “The first thing I need to do after this match is to clear my head. We battled amazingly even in added time, which almost felt like a third half. What the fans did was also unbelievable. It’s great when you sense that an entire region is behind the team. I really don’t know what happened with Alfred Finnbogason’s red card or what the referee was punishing.”
Peter: Stöger: “It is a disappointing defeat for us. We made too many silly errors at the back and we brought it upon ourselves. We got caught up in the hectic nature of this game and the emotions of it. After being 2-0 down at half-time, I got the feeling that we wanted to redeem ourselves and turn the match around but that was difficult because of the emotion, aggression and chaos.”
