“Take the level of performance we gave against Köln with us and build further: that is our task” – FCA head coach Manuel Baum has his wishes and expectations set out ahead of the team’s trip to meet Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday (15:30 CEST kick off). At least 1,000 Augsburg fans are expected to make the trip to the Commerzbank Arena.
Just as in the week before the win over Köln, which Paul Verheagh described as the “medicine for the FCA soul”, Baum’s boys have trained well and the whole team has come through training “intact” according the captain. The manager will now want to see the same venomous mentality his team showed a week ago.
The hot topic of conversation at the moment, is the FCA squad situation. As well as the injured Ja-Cheol Koo, Jan Moravek, Raul Bobadilla and Caiuby, Alfred Finnbogason is suspended after his red card last week while Dominik Kohr must serve a match ban for picking up ten yellow cards. Furthermore, the participation of Gojko Kacar and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw remains in doubt. Baum will therefore be forced to rotate once more in his 16th game as boss. Despite the squad depletion the 37-year-old is remaining optimistic: “Continuity in the starting line-up is important but I am happy because our squad has quality running right the way through it, which compensates for any absentees.” Paul Verhaegh also knows how much quality the FCA squad offers: “We had a big, balanced squad. Whoever play on Saturday it will be a strong team.”
Despite Frankfurt not matching their form from before Christmas in the second half of the season, Baum knows his side must put on a good show if they are to pick up points on Saturday. “We don’t see Frankfurt as struggling. They are creating just as many chances as they were in the first half of the season, but they are just not putting as many away. They have not had the rub of the green of late, a sentiment agreed with by Verhaegh. “Form means nothing for us. We were written off after the defeat in Bremen but we went on a great run after that. We know what is coming for us on Saturday!”
