Tietz: “A disastrous performance”
The reaction to the 5-1 defeat in Kiel
FC Augsburg fell to a heavy 5-1 loss in Kiel to round off the calendar year. Read all the post-match reaction here.
Marius Wolf: “It wasn’t the performance we wanted at all. We took the lead and then the wheels came off completely. Kiel were always a step ahead of us. We weren’t good enough from top to bottom and, to be honest, it wasn’t Bundesliga standard. It shouldn’t be happening, and each and every one of us should go away and take a look in the mirror. We’ve got to dust ourselves off over Christmas if we want to start the new year with a clean slate and show a different side to our game.”
Phillip Tietz: “You can’t sugarcoat anything about today. It was an inexplicably disastrous performance. We weren’t good enough in any area of the game. It hurts but above all it’s painful for the fans who always have our back through thick and thin. We were pumped up and took the lead – and then something like that happens. Maybe we were too complacent after going 1-0 up. It wasn’t the performance and approach that makes FC Augsburg a strong team.”
Dimitris Giannoulis: “It’s extremely frustrating. We wanted to end the year with a win and got off to a good start. After that, we had big problems at the back. We wanted to come back in the second half but, unfortunately, we couldn’t do it. I’m really sorry to all the fans.”
Nediljko Labrović: “Everything we tried didn’t come off. We made way too many mistakes. I want to apologise to the fans who travelled such a long way to cheer us on. We’re really disappointed, but we’ve got to look to the future now. We’ve got to show that today was a slip-up in the new year.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “I apologise to the more than 1,000 travelling supporters that we played like that today. There are no words for a performance like that and I don’t really know if I can describe how I’m feeling now that the game is over. It’s a bitter pill to swallow and it’ll take a few days to process. In an ideal world I’d like to be playing again immediately in a few days’ time to get over the hump. But now we can and must contemplate how we put in a performance like that. Every point counts in the battle for survival. We didn’t show that fight on the pitch today.”
Marcel Rapp (Holstein Kiel head coach): “We started badly and went behind after the first chance of the game. The quick equaliser was crucial for us. The boys gave it their all and were rewarded for their efforts. On the whole, it was a performance that was full of grit and also a step forward in terms of the quality of football. I’m over the moon and proud of the team and what they pulled off today.”
