Thorup: “We’ll keep our foot on the gas”
Home game against Frankfurt on Easter Sunday
There are just five matches left in the Bundesliga, and FC Augsburg are ready to give everything for the final push. On Easter Sunday (15:30 CEST), FCA host Eintracht Frankfurt at a sold-out WWK ARENA.
The Fuggerstädter reached the 40-point mark with their 2-1 win in Bochum, and now sit tenth in the table on 42 points. For head coach Jess Thorup though, this is not a reason to let up in any way. “We’re happy about that, but we won’t sit back and relax now. We’ll keep our foot on the gas and we want to pick up as many points as possible!”
There are still 15 to play for, and FCA are raring to go for the final push, thanks to their confidence built up over the past few weeks and the support from the fans. Frankfurt are third in the league and already have 51 points on the board. Before their visit to Augsburg though, Eintracht have a Europa League quarter-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur on the agenda. Thorup will be one of those watching on TV on Thursday evening.
Just one defeat in the second half of the season
“Frankfurt are a great team and are having a very good season,” said the Dane. The reverse fixture finished 2-2, with Phillip Tietz and Samuel Essende finding the net for FCA. The Fuggerstädter have suffered just one defeat in the second half of the season, and that was at home against FC Bayern. Frankfurt’s most-recent game was a comfortable 3-0 win over Heidenheim.
It's looking good in terms of squad availability too. Apart from Arne Maier, who is suspended for two matches after his red card in Bochum, Thorup has virtually a full quota of players to pick from. Mert Kömür could be a possible starter after the 19-year-old scored the winning goal in Bochum last time out. “He’s very close,” said Thorup, who didn’t want to give anything away.
