Thorup: “Sometimes, football is crazy”
The reaction to the 2-1 win in Bochum
FC Augsburg ran out as 2-1 winners over VfL Bochum after going a man down. Read all the reaction to an eventful match of football below.
Finn Dahmen: “There’s always a great atmosphere here in Bochum and it’s fun to play in a stadium like this. I had a lot to do, too much in fact, but I’m glad that I could help the team out with my saves, and that we ended up winning the game. We’re super happy, since we didn’t play well for long stretches of the game. We started the first half well and deservedly took the lead. We took our foot off the gas a bit in the middle of the half and were more passive. Even more credit has to go to the team for how they reacted after the red card. The winning goal was really well worked by Phillip and Mert.”
Mert Kömür: “It was all a blur – suddenly we were down to ten men, the coach called on me and then I was in on goal. It’s an unbelievable feeling, and it makes me proud that I was able to play my part for the team with a goal. I’m taking any and all experience in my stride and am trying to take it all on board. We’re always looking ahead to the next match which worked well last week so we want to keep it up. Results like the one today are the product of hard work. We’ll listen to a bit of music on the way back.”
Keven Schlotterbeck: “We hit them with a sucker punch at the end of the match – Tietz’s pass was super and Mert was ice-cold. Before that, it was a hard-fought game in front of a fired-up crowd – I’m familiar with the Ruhrstadion’s flair. We started well by going in front but then, like many other teams that come here in front of this crowd, we started to struggle. We never stopped believing, though. Even after the red card we were convinced that we could still do it. The burst of at the end of the match shows that attack is the best form of defence – now, we don’t have to watch our backs.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “Sometimes, football is crazy. We had a good start to the game and got a well-deserved goal. Then, we lost control of the game. We were under pressure right from the start of the second half, conceded and equaliser and then went down to ten men. In that position, you’d actually try to protect the point – but we still managed to come away with three even though we were a man down. Games like this make me feel like I’ve aged three or four years, but it was fantastic to celebrate the win with the fans after the match.”
Dieter Hecking (VfL Bochum head coach): “At the start of the game, you could still see the effects of the Stuttgart game. We could’ve cleared the ball earlier to prevent them from scoring the opener. Things started to improve after the half-an-hour mark, and we started to take risks, turn up the heat and carve out some promising opportunities in the second half. But a quality keeper was standing between the posts at the other end of the pitch. We wanted to pile on the pressure with the extra man – and then something that should never happen happened. In a two-on-seven situation, we conceded. It’s disappointing, because once again we were the better team.”
