Teigl: “It is a privilege to play here!”
FC Augsburg have begun their final training week of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season. The Fuggerstädter conclude their league campaign away against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, 18th May (15:30 CEST). Georg Teigl and head coach Martin Schmidt are excited for FCA’s final challenge against the Wolves.
It has been an extremely positive end to the season for Georg Teigl. Since Martin Schmidt took over as FC Augsburg head coach, the Austrian has featured in each of the last three matches. In Saturday’s last-gasp 4-3 home defeat to Hertha BSC, Teigl featured for the full 90 minutes and he is naturally pleased with his current role in the team. “I’m someone who never gives up. In my opinion, it is a privilege to play here. I’m very grateful to have that opportunity. Consequently, I always want to give my best. That is every player’s responsibility in front of the fans,” added the Austrian.
The 28 year-old has also flourished under the Swiss head coach’s style of play. “Of course the style of play plays to my strengths. The head coach (Schmidt) likes fast players who can win the ball and turn defence into attack. This is exactly my style of play. I would now like to thank him and pay him back for the trust he has given me in recent weeks. The 52-year-old FCA head coach also praised Teigl’s efforts: “I can see that players who have made 30 appearances this season are slowly becoming tired. Georg brings a fresh wind of energy into matches and has made a good impression in training.”
Schmidt already planning for next season
The players will enjoy a deserved holiday following the conclusion of the Bundesliga season. However, a stressful period of planning lies ahead for Schmidt. “In the forthcoming weeks, we will hold our first coaching meetings to make first plans for next season’s squad as well as analysing this season. I’m currently not thinking about a holiday anytime soon. However, a break does make sense as I want to prioritise the pre-season preparations ahead of next season.” Notably, the risk of of injury should be minimalised with the correct pre-season schedule. Instead, the pre-season should be used to build team character and to strengthen the squad. “In our pre-season training, we don’t want to train flat out each day, in case we suffer accidents and injuries. At the same time, we need to have experiences as a full squad which brings the team together. The team should benefit from these experiences throughout all of next season.”
