Schmidt: "We want to perform well away from home"
The first away win will come
Last weekend, FC Augsburg stole a surprising 2-2 draw against the heavily-favoured FC Bayern thanks to a last gasp equaliser. Now, the Fuggerstädter want to finally rack up their first away win of the season. Ahead of Sunday’s game, Head Coach Martin Schmidt gave us his opinions on...
… The last match: “Of course, the relief after the Bayern game was great, especially seeing as the equaliser came in the 92nd minute. You could see how everybody was hugging everybody; on the pitch, on the bench and in the stands. At the end of the day though, it is still only one point. The fight continues, but we have a tailwind now and it gave us a lot of positivity in the team.”
... Marco Richter’s early goal and Tomáš Koubek’s saves: “Marco Richter is a good example of all the hard work that our rehabilitation and athletics department does. He was mentally prepared to seize his chance. We hadn’t planned for him to score so early, but that is what makes it even more special. Tomáš Koubek had a great game. The performance he gave after they equalised perfectly reflected the match. How his performance was reported and also the players’ reaction to it was well deserved. We all have to take power and energy away from the game, because the work doesn’t stop here.”
... Personnel: “Regarding Marek Suchý and Carlos Gruezo, nothing has changed from last week. Reece Oxford is the only one still suffering from muscle issues, but it doesn’t seem to be too bad. He is back running now, and we will increase his involvement day by day. Maybe we will see an improvement by the weekend.”
... Preparations for the Wolfsburg game: “We have a huge task ahead of us. The squad is now being assessed as a team, not as a group of individuals. We face challenges as a team and have to work together to fix any problems. The fact that Wolfsburg are still unbeaten is certainly additional motivation. On the other hand, our own run of form away from home must come to an end; we still haven’t registered an away win. Therefore the focus is on us, we want to perform well away from home. Then anything is possible.”
