May: Ending the season in 11th
2024 Year in Review, part 5
Another year is coming to an end: 12 eventful months of both highs and lows, along with plenty of memorable moments for FC Augsburg. It's time to once more reflect on the past 365 days. In part five of FCA's Year in Review, we look back on May.
League action: FC Augsburg suffered a heavy defeat away at Borussia Dortmund, losing 5-1. Ruben Vargas was able to get a consolation goal for FCA against this season’s Champions League semi-finalists.
The final home game of the 2023/24 season saw FCA host VfB Stuttgart on a Friday evening. Despite a solid performance, Jess Thorup’s side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against the Swabians.
FC Augsburg then travelled to Leverkusen on the final day of the season. Despite finding themselves trailing 2-0 at half-time, Mert Kömür was able to get a goal back for FCA. It wasn’t enough to prevent a narrow 2-1 defeat against the already-crowned champions. Mahmut Kücüksahin was able to make his Bundesliga debut after being subbed on in injury time.
FCA finished the 2023/24 Bundesliga season in 11th place with 39 points, the third-best finish in the club’s top-flight history.
Off the pitch: At the club’s end-of-season party, Iago (joining EC Bahia) and goalkeeping coach Marco Kostmann both received a fitting send-off. Afterwards, the players and staff departed for their well-deserved summer holidays.
International duty: The holidays would have to wait for a handful of players, however, with Ermedin Demirović, Ruben Vargas, Kevin Mbabu, Arne Engels and Dion Beljo all meeting up with their respective national teams to begin preparations for EURO 2024 in Germany.
Transfer news: FCA triggered the purchase option for Eintracht Frankfurt loanee Kristijan Jakić, with the defensive midfielder putting pen to paper on a long-term deal until 2028.
