Max: “It’s a season-defining game”
Philipp Max has the second highest number of direct goal involvements at the club so far this season behind Florian Niederlechner, with six goals and five assists. The left back speaks before the home game against SV Werder Bremen about his impressive stats, the national team and the match against the Green Whites.
You currently have six goals and five assists so far this season – a fantastic return for a defender.
It was clear to me that expectations were raised after my strong season in 2017/18. Last season was generally very difficult for all of us and I didn’t get a great return. However, I was able to learn from my mistakes and have come out of the other side even stronger. First and foremost I am a defender and I just concentrate on doing whatever I can to help the team be successful.
Lothar Matthäus has put you forward as a potential candidate for the national team in an interview.
I’ve only seen the headline. But of course, it’s a great feeling when such a world class player says something like that about you. It just confirms that you’re doing the right thing.
It’s very surprising that Werder are in 16th place.
You’re hosting Werder Bremen today at the WWK ARENA. Matches against Werder never fail to disappoint, with a total of 26 goals in your last six matches against them. That equates to an average of 4.33 goals per game.
It’s great for the neutral and, as long as we score one more than Bremen, hopefully it will continue like that. The most important thing is that the three points stay here in Augsburg.
A win would put you nine points clear of Bremen. You don’t need to be an expert to tell just how important this game is.
Of course; it’s a season-defining game. I find it very surprising that Werder are in 16th place. It’s a difficult situation to be in for them. Nevertheless, we are ready and will go into the game with the will to win.
