Herrlich: “We didn’t manage to be dangerous”

Reaction to the second round of the DFB-Pokal

First Team 22.12.2020, 21:31

FC Augsburg were beaten 3-0 by RasenBallsport Leipzig in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. “We didn’t manage to be dangerous in the final third,” says head coach Heiko Herrlich.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We wanted to be defensively compact from the start today, but that didn’t work, particularly in the first half. But we still thought that there was everything to play for when it was 1-0 at half time. In the end, maybe we just weren’t good enough. Leipzig deserved to win. When you give them the space that we did in the first half, it’s always dangerous against a top side. Now we need to turn off, recuperate and come back in the new year with full focus on the Bundesliga.”

Rafał Gikiewicz: “We weren’t at the races in the first 30 minutes of the game; Leipzig showed their class and it could’ve been 3- or 4-0. But we have quality too and we did better in the second half – we fought for every ball. Leipzig used their chances really well after missing them in the first half.”

Heiko Herrlich: “We didn’t manage to get a foothold in the game in the first half hour. We didn’t go into tackles and we only picked up a bit more courage when we changed things about and pressed higher. The best thing at half time was that it was only 1-0. The boys were brave in the second half, but we still didn’t manage to be dangerous in the final third. Leipzig then used their chance to make it 2-0 and added a nice third goal. The result is fair.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “We’re very happy to progress to the next round. It was a very strong first 30 minutes with lots of chances. We knew that FC Augsburg are dangerous on the counter, but we defended that well too. Augsburg pressed us higher in the second half and caused us problems trying to play out from the back. The game was much more open, but the second goal made it much easier.”
