FC Augsburg won 1-0 at Borussia Dortmund on matchday 25 to set a new club record in the Bundesliga. Jess Thorup’s side are now unbeaten in their last nine league games.
Thorup made one change to the team that drew at Freiburg last Sunday: Elvis Rexhbecaj replaced Kristijan Jakić in the starting XI after the midfielder had suffered from an adductor problem during the week.
Dortmund started well and won a number of early corners to put Augsburg under pressure. However, the FCA defence, which had kept a clean sheet in each of the last four games, was once again solid and kept things tight at Signal Iduna Park.
FCA surprisingly took the lead in the 23rd minute. Marius Wolf’s free-kick from deep found captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw at the back post and his looping header flew over Gregor Kobel and into the back of the net to make it 1-0. It was the Dutchman’s first goal of the season and what a time to get it! BVB wanted a penalty with 32 minutes played after Cédric Zesiger’s challenge on Serhou Guirassy, however there wasn’t enough contact to warrant a spot-kick. Augsburg were therefore able to go into the break with the lead, with the Dortmund players booed off by their own fans.
VAR involved throughout the second half
The home team looked to have equalised at the start of the second half. Julian Brandt had the ball in the net after a header from Nico Schlotterbeck, but VAR showed that the Borussia man was narrowly offside (50’). VAR was then involved again at the other end. With an hour played, Gouweleeuw headed a Wolf free-kick back across goal and Salih Özcan turned the ball into his own net. After spending almost five minutes analysing the incident, VAR adjudged Jakić to have been offside, with the substitute blocking an opponent from getting to Gouweleeuw.
Dortmund wasted a good chance through Guirassy’s header (72’) and Alexis Claude-Maurice had a shot blocked for FCA 60 seconds later. The hosts had eight minutes of injury time to find a leveller and almost did with three played, but Guirassy fired just past the far post. Jakić ran out of steam from a counter-attack at the other end, before Samuel Essende had a goal chalked off for offside.
Die Bildergalerie zum Spiel!
It didn’t matter in the end though, as FCA avoided defeat for the ninth straight game and kept a fifth straight clean sheet. The Fuggerstädter’s ninth win of the season has drawn them level with Dortmund on points, though Thorup’s team remain in 11th below BVB due to an inferior goal difference. Up next is a home game against VfL Wolfsburg.
