April: Retro vibes and setbacks

2024 Year in Review, part 4

First Team 28.12.2024, 09:07

Another year is coming to an end: 12 eventful months of both highs and lows, along with plenty of memorable moments for FC Augsburg. It's time to once more reflect on the past 365 days. In part four of FCA's Year in Review, we look back on April.

League action: FC Augsburg's run of five straight games without defeat came to an end on Bundesliga matchday 28. Ermedin Demirović managed to get FCA back on level terms against TSG Hoffenheim (1-1) with what was his 15th goal of the season, but was unable to prevent the team from ultimately falling to a 3-1 defeat. The match will hold a special place in Mert Kömür's memory, however, with the FCA academy product coming on to make his Bundesliga debut in the 75th minute.

FCA then opened matchday 29 against Union Berlin, with goals from Philipp Tietz and Sven Michel earning them a well-deserved 2-0 home win. Daniel Hausmann and David Deger from the club's U23s were both included in the matchday squad for the first time.

Jess Thorup's side were in sixth place with 39 points as they headed to Frankfurt the following week. Despite going into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead courtesy of Ruben Vargas, FCA ended up losing 3-1. It also marked the end of their eight-game winning run on a Friday night in the Bundesliga.

The team's next home game against SV Werder Bremen also ended in disappointment, after a 3-0 loss.

Off the pitch: 'Green Week' at FCA came to an end with a tree planting initiative at the FCA forest. Two years ago, the club began to reforest a wooded area in the vicinity of the WWK ARENA, in cooperation with the city of Augsburg and the Augsburg forestry commission.

FCA's home game against SV Werder Bremen featured several activities aimed at honouring the club's 1973/74 Regionalliga-winning side. There were many retro-inspired activities hosted on and around matchday, including a Vespa parade, a retro tram, retro merchandise collection, live music and a folksfest, with the club taking the time to honour their title-winning squad 50 years on from their triumphant campaign.
