Weinzierl: “Would have deserved a win”
Post-match reaction following defeat in Stuttgart
FC Augsburg delivered a strong performance against VfB Stuttgart, but failed to be rewarded for their efforts. “We could have picked up points and even would have deserved a win,” head coach Markus Weinzierl said after the game. Hear all the post-match reaction from both sides.
André Hahn: “We had a clear game plan today, and wanted to be courageous and press hard. We managed to do that well. We created several chances for ourselves, but in the end, we have to take advantage of these. That’s what was missing tonight. But, we played as a team and I’m still optimistic that we will pick up the points we need. At FC Augsburg, we know what it’s like to be under pressure and how to deal with it.”
Florian Niederlechner: “It’s definitely tough to take, when you look at the sort of chances we had. In the end, that’s what it comes down to. You could see the ease with which Stuttgart were playing, while we were on the back foot. Then you go on to lose a game which you thought you wouldn’t be able to lose. We need to now put this game behind us, come to terms with it and reward ourselves against Bremen. I would have rather not scored myself and instead left with more goals as a team.”
Rafal Gikiewicz: “We didn’t defend well on either of the goals, and shouldn’t have let that happen. We had several chances ourselves, but lacked that final touch. Now, we’re left empty-handed even though we played well away from home. We need to absorb the pressure, fight back and deliver another strong performance against Bremen in order to win the game.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We had the opportunity to win the game and had higher quality chances compared to Stuttgart. That’s why it’s hard to accept that we’re leaving empty-handed. We had the right mindset and played well, but also made mistakes and didn’t finish our chances.”
Marco Richter: “We had a really good feeling ahead of the game, were well-prepared and that showed on the pitch. You can’t accuse us of lacking aggressiveness or of playing poorly. In fact, it’s the opposite: we played good football but failed to be rewarded. We are FC Augsburg and will pick ourselves up and direct our full focus to the game against Bremen. We want to win that game.”
Markus Weinzierl: “We played well away from home, covered more ground than our opponents and had the better chances. Having the edge on corners (12-2) and shots on goal (21-15) speaks for itself when it comes to an away game. We fell apart twice in defence and weren’t clinical enough up front. We could have picked up points and would have deserved to win. The lads showed that they can do it, which is why we will take the positives from tonight into next week and focus on preparing ourselves for Bremen.”
Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We started well into the game after five minutes and then took the lead. We made several mistakes after 25 minutes and got knocked out of synch as a result. We weren’t aggressive enough in the second half, which allowed Augsburg to create chances and score at the right time. We then got back on track and you could see how the players fought for the win, even if it was a bit dirty at times.”
