Weinzierl: “We are disappointed, but also very proud.”

Reaction to defeat in Munich

Despite putting up a brave fight, Augsburg suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Bundesliga champions. “We played well over the 90 minutes, but we ended up with nothing,” said Markus Weinzierl. Reaction from the game:

Rafał Gikiewicz: “We put in a good performance but in the end we conceded one goal too many. We had the better chances in the first half and we could have taken the lead. Nevertheless, Bayern also had some good opportunities. Whether we would’ve got something out of the game if it wasn’t for the penalty is just mere speculation. I’m looking ahead and I’m looking forward to the home game against Hertha. I really hope the stadium is full again for that one.”

Niklas Dorsch: “It’s really bitter that we lost that game because we showed real fight. We had some good chances in the first half and you have to take them in games like this. The only thing we lacked today was the goal. You can’t argue with the penalty decision, these are just the rules. We know that our fate is in our own hands and we have to fight like we did today against Hertha.”

Markus Weinzierl: “I have to give my team credit for putting in such a good performance. We played well over the 90 minutes but we ended up with nothing. We gave it everything and we were tactically very disciplined. We went about things in absolutely the right way. We didn’t take advantage of the good moments in the opening stages and we should’ve been more clinical. In the second half Bayern played with a real intensity and they brought all their quality. We held out for a long time and it was a really unfortunate penalty to concede. We are obviously disappointed because we would’ve loved to have taken a point but we are really proud of our performance and confident that we can pick up the points in the next game.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “We didn’t play well in the first half. We were tactically well set up but we didn’t move the ball quick enough. There were one or two moments at the back where we were lucky not to concede. In the second half it was better. The fans were great for us today. It wasn’t the ideal game to have before a tough second leg against Villareal but it was important that we won.”
