Weinzierl: “I look at the bigger picture”
Reaction to Sunday’s defeat in Leipzig
FC Augsburg are guaranteed another season of Bundesliga football, but there was still a painful 4-0 defeat on Sunday evening. “The game wasn’t good for us, but I look at the bigger picture – we have achieved our goal,” said Markus Weinzierl. We gathered all the match reaction.
Niklas Dorsch: “I don’t feel much like celebrating after a game like that. The first ten minutes were alright, but that doesn’t really matter when you put in a performance like that. It was embarrassing at times – we can’t allow that to happen. It’s down to every single one of us to put that right in the final home game. Nevertheless, we will play Bundesliga football next season and that was our primary goal.”
Florian Niederlechner: “We fully deserved to lose because Leipzig were the far better team. We obviously knew about the result at Bayern before the game, but we can’t let that be an excuse for our performance. Once we digest this defeat, then we can take solace in the fact that we have secured our top-flight status on matchday 33.”
Rafał Gikiewicz: “We couldn’t have complained if we had ended up losing by more. We made a lot of mistakes and didn’t play well at all. Everyone needs to ask themselves if they really gave everything today. Ultimately though, we are staying up and there’s no taking that away from us. However, it’s also clear that we have to analyse things so that we can be more consistent next season and give our fans more to cheer about.”
Felix Uduokhai: “It was an odd situation. We knew that we had stayed up and that ought to have spurred us on. There was no sign of that in the game though, so we’re obviously very disappointed about the performance. We want to end the season on a positive note against Fürth.”
Markus Weinzierl: “Of course we’re disappointed with the game. The first 30 minutes were okay, but then we lost our control after going behind, especially in the second half. The spaces that we were allowing the opposition became bigger and Leipzig really took advantage of them with their quality. We also invited them onto us. It wasn’t a good game, but I look at the bigger picture – we have achieved our goal. We’re relieved that we have clarity ahead of the final matchday and will be playing Bundesliga football again next season.”
Domenico Tedesco: “It wasn’t an easy game, especially because of the Europa League semi-final loss a few days ago. Therefore, the start to the game was rough and nervous, but over time we found our feet and got into our groove, especially with the second and third goals. From then on, it was a really good game from us. I also congratulate FCA on securing Bundesliga survival.
