Weinzierl: "A massive well done to the lads”
Post-match reaction following victory against Bremen
FC Augsburg have secured safety following a 2-0 win over SV Werder Bremen. “The team did incredibly well in what was a very emotional game,” head coach Markus Weinzierl said afterwards. Here is all the post-match reaction following the victory against Bremen.
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We fought for every ball and were rewarded for it today. It’s important that we kept a clean sheet, that was the key to our success especially after going a man down early on. Eleven years of Bundesliga football is a great achievement for FC Augsburg, one that isn’t to be expected. In the end, we earned it.”
Daniel Caligiuri: “This game had everything, it really was an emotional rollercoaster. From the early red card to that ‘let’s get it done’ feeling. As a team, we proved what we’re capable of, played as a unit and deservedly came out on top. After going through a bit of a slump, we were able to reward ourselves by staying up.”
Florian Niederlechner: “You have to give credit where credit is due: the way the team played today was great. We gave it our all and bounced back from every setback. We successfully turned things around, after our recent slump. The red card for Bremen was a sign for us that we could win today. We’re even more pleased to have secured safety as well.”
Reece Oxford: “Defensively, we had a lot to do, but everyone gave it everything and kept a clean sheet. We’ve brought the season to a successful end and can now enjoy our final match in Munich.”
Rani Khedira: “There were a lot of emotions in this game today for me. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to say goodbye after four years: an emotional game, my first goal of the season and we secured survival – it doesn’t get any better than that. FC Augsburg showed again today what makes the club special and that’s the togetherness. The reception we got from the fans was fantastic. The game began really badly with the red card, but we kept on believing and did everything to get the win.”
Markus Weinzierl: “The team did really well in an extremely emotional match. Having a man sent off after 15 minutes was really tough for us. We did well up until the break though. Their red card obviously helped us as things were evened up. We got the goals and had luck on our side today. That’s what you need in a situation like this. I’m really pleased with the three points and that we’re safe. A massive well done to the lads for what they did today.”
Florian Kohfeldt: “Congratulations to FCA on staying up. This has been a tough day for us, not just because of the fact that survival is no longer in our own hands. Everything was on our side. We had the best chances but then had a stupid red card. We fell asleep for their first goal and were then unlucky as we hit the post. Augsburg took their small chances and we just have to accept that.”
