Weinzierl: "A bitter and unnecessary defeat"
Reaction to Hertha loss
It was a pointless Easter Sunday for FC Augsburg in their game against Hertha BSC. “We are disappointed and this is a bitter and unnecessary defeat,” concluded Markus Weinzierl after the game. Read all the match reaction here.
Ricardo Pepi: “It’s really tough that we've lost this game. We were just missing that final pass today, the ball that would decide the game in our favour. But we still have four important games ahead of us in which we have to keep fighting in order to survive.”
Michael Gregoritsch: “Overall we were just missing that but of precision, we weren't urgent enough in front of goal. Right from the beginning we battled well but because we conceded right after the break we spent the whole second half chasing the game. Now we have to keep working hard, go into the games to come with lots of motivation and give it everything. Then we will reap the rewards again.”
Rafał Gikiewicz: “We really didn't have a good game today. We didn't get into the tackles and we made too many simple mistakes. In the last three games we've had most of our joy from counterattacks. By contrast, Hertha sat really deep and we lost our patience. The possession was in our favour but we just didn't create enough chances. The next match is in Bochum and that is where our full focus lies.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Neither side played well. Hertha tried to take the pace out the game from the start and we didn't manage to counteract that. We started the second half really badly and made a decisive error which led to their goal. The little things are vital in a game like this and that's why we lost. Now we have another chance in Bochum and we have to just focus on ourselves rather than looking elsewhere.”
Markus Weinzierl: “We are disappointed and this is a bitter and unnecessary defeat. We had a strong start but Hertha knocked us off our rhythm with their challenges. It was obvious that the team that went in front would have an enormous advantage. We started the second half okay but the opposition goal was of our own making with the mistake. And then of course the match was only headed in one direction with not even one major chance for our side.”
Felix Magath (Hertha BSC head coach): “It was a 90-minute battle for us and what we've done out on the pitch today was absolutely vital for our survival. After the opener we were actually still under pressure and we managed to secure the result with plenty of fight and some luck. It wasn't an undeserved win from my point of view and it is obviously massively important for us.”
