Vargas makes his debut – Gregoritsch scores
Several Augsburg players were on international duty at the weekend, including debutant Ruben Vargas and goal-scoring substitute Michael Gregoritsch.
Ruben Vargas was called up to Switzerland’s senior national team on Thursday as a late replacement and made his debut on Sunday in a 4-0 win against Gibraltar. The 21-year-old came on for former Gladbach player Granit Xhaka in the closing stages of the game. Switzerland remain in third place of their European Championship qualifying group with a game in hand on their rivals.
Meanwhile, Fredrik Jensen and Finland suffered a small setback. The Scandinavian side lost 2-1 against Italy as Jensen watched from the bench. Despite the defeat, Finland are still in second place in group J behind Italy.
Disappointment for Koubek and Suchy – substitute Gregoritsch finds the net
Czech internationals Tomáš Koubek and Marek Suchý lost 2-1 to underdogs Kosovo on Saturday. While the central defender led his team onto the pitch as captain, the goalkeeper was an unused sub. The defeat caused the Czech Republic to slip to third place in group A.
Meanwhile, Michael Gregoritsch enjoyed a high-scoring victory with Austria on Friday. The attacking player came on in the closing stages against Latvia and struck just before full time to make it 6-0. Austria climbed to second place in group G with the win.
