Vargas and Zeqiri qualify for 2022 World Cup
'Nati' finish top of Group C
Switzerland's Ruben Vargas and Andi Zeqiri have qualified for the 2022 World Cup after finishing top of their group with a 4-0 win against Bulgaria on Monday night.
Heading into the final matchday, Italy and Switzerland were level on points in first and second place respectively. Italy were top of the group with a slightly better goal difference (+2). Switzerland therefore needed to beat Bulgaria, and hope that Northern Ireland would be able to keep the Italians from scoring.
The Swiss moved into top spot with a 4-0 victory over Bulgaria, surpassing the reigning European champions, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Northern Ireland. Noah Okafor scored the opener just after the break (48'), before Ruben Vargas added a second (57'). Cedric Itten (72') and Remo Freuler (90'+1) then rounded off the win. Vargas was then subbed off in the closing minutes and replaced by FCA teammate Zeqiri.
Meanwhile, Robert Gumny and Poland lost 2-1 to Hungary in their final World Cup qualifier. Andreas Sc#fer (37') and Daniel Gazdag (80') scored for Hungary, with Karol Swiderski netting an equaliser in between (61'). Gumny was an unused substitute. Poland had already been guaranteed to finish second in the group, securing themselves a spot in the play-offs.
