Tietz: “We were only missing that goal”

Reaction from the 0-0 draw with Freiburg

First Team 02.03.2025, 20:55

FC Augsburg failed to find the net despite some good opportunities, but did extend their unbeaten run with a 0-0 draw against SC Freiburg. Here’s all the reaction from the match.

Phillip Tietz: “We played really well today. I thought we were the better team, and we were only missing that goal. We had a few chances, and I should have scored myself. The most important thing, though, is that we managed to create so many opportunities. We played very well against an in-form Freiburg side. We were all pleased with Finn Dahmen’s performance. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in Germany right now.”

Finn Dahmen: “That was a very good performance from us. We upped our game, particularly on the ball. It was a shame that we didn’t get our reward for that. We would have deserved the win. My new personal record is a nice bonus and a good bit of recognition, but it wasn’t my main aim today. I would rather the team had got the three points. The lads in the dressing room are disappointed right now. It shows how well we’re doing when we’re disappointed with a 0-0 draw against the team fifth in the league. We’re going to Dortmund next week full of confidence.”

Frank Onyeka: “We gave everything and had our chances. In the end, we had to settle for the point. When I hit the bar, I was sure it was going in. It was a shame that it didn’t result in a goal. Now, we’re going to focus fully on the next match. We’re unbeaten in eight games, so we’ll go to Dortmund brimming with confidence.”

Steve Mounié: “That was a great team performance, one of our best this season. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances. If you don’t win, it’s important that you don’t lose. Now, we’ve got Dortmund next, who are a strong team, particularly at home. It’ll be a tough match, but we’re confident and taking it game by game.”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “That was one of our best performances this season. The first half was very good. We controlled the game, created chances and worked very hard. We were very close to scoring, particularly when we hit the bar. The second half was more even, and the game could have gone either way. We piled on the pressure in the last 10 or 12 minutes, and were missing a bit of luck again when we hit the post. In the end, we’re disappointed with only a point against a team in the top five. That shows that we’re on a good run right now. We’ve gone eight matches without losing.”

Julian Schuster (SC Freiburg head coach): “We started the match well and were finding the spaces in attack. Our big problem today was that we didn’t have the precision to get into the final third and create goalscoring chances. From the 20th minute, Augsburg were the better side. They were more flexible, had more facets to their play and were on top. In the second half, we made a few small tactical tweaks and that helped us gain more control of the ball. Both teams had one big chance, but couldn’t take it. In the end, the result was probably what everyone expected. We kept a clean sheet against a side who are in very good form at the moment. That’s not to be taken for granted.”
