Excellent home form continues
A hard-fought victory! FC Augsburg beat VfL Bochum 1-0 at home on matchday 12 courtesy of Phillip Tietz’s penalty.
Jess Thorup made three changes from the 3-0 loss in Munich for this match against winless Bochum. Henri Koudossou made his first league start for the club as he deputised for the injured Dimitrios Giannoulis, while Maximilian Bauer replaced the suspended Keven Schlotterbeck at centre-back. Kristijan Jakić was the other player to come into the starting XI.
After Alexis Claude-Maurice had a shot from distance in the second minute, the opening period of the game was a real battle, with technical mistakes being made by both sides. As a result, there were more tackles flying in than chances created. The visitors first threatened in the ninth minute: Moritz Broschinski’s curling attempt only just missed the target.
The Fuggerstädter were able to do more with the ball after that. Claude-Maurice saw his effort blocked (13’) and then Elvis Rexhbecaj miscued a shot which went well wide (29’). After Marius Wolf was denied by goalkeeper Patrick Drewes, Claude-Maurice was fouled in the VfL box by Philipp Hofmann. Phillip Tietz took the resulting penalty and sent Drewes the wrong way to give FCA a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half saw FCA put in a strong performance at both ends of the pitch. Wolf was responsible for several attacks originating from the right flank, coincidentally also the same side of the pitch from which FCA delivered a corner in the 64th minute. Substitute Samuel Essende headed the ball on target before the rebound fell to Maximilian Bauer, who buried it in the back of the net. The goal wouldn't count, however, as the lineman's flag had gone up.
As the match entered the final 15 minutes of play, Bochum managed to see more of the ball within the opponent's half. Moussa Sissoko then only narrowly missed the target for VfL (74'). Bochum sought to take advantage of a slight miscommunication at the back from the FCA backline in the closing stages, before being forced to play the final minutes with only 10 men after Jakov Medic was forced off injured with no further substitutions possible. Steve Mounié and Essende both missed chances to add to FCA's lead late on, but the hosts were able to hold on over the course of seven minutes of additional time to extend their unbeaten run at the WWK ARENA to five straight games across all competitions.
FCA will be back in action on Wednesday evening already, as they face Karlsruher SC in the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal (20:45 CET). Three days later, Throup's side will travel to Frankfurt for matchday 13 in the Bundesliga.
