Thorup: “Our aim is to record back-to-back wins”

Away in Bremen on matchday 18

First Team 17.01.2025, 14:45

Following a 2-0 victory at Union Berlin in midweek, FC Augsburg are back on the road for the start of the second half of the season. Jess Thorup is hoping his team can taste success again on Sunday (17:30 CET) away to SV Werder Bremen.

“It was a really important win,” reflected Thorup on the 2-0 victory at Union Berlin on Wednesday night. “It was a confident performance and we played with real courage. We got two goals, kept a clean sheet and ultimately deserved the win, so I was satisfied.”

New signing Cédric Zesiger made his debut for the club in Köpenick: “Cedric slotted in to the team immediately and did well straight away,” praised Thorup. The Dane wants to build on the positives from Union ahead of FCA’s second away game of the calendar year. The Fuggerstädter’s busy week concludes in Bremen on Sunday, with around 400 away fans set to make the long trip up north. “Our aim is to record back-to-back wins and we believe we can do it,” said Thorup.

Thorup: “Passion and fighting spirit”

Werder Bremen are in ninth place with 26 points at the midway stage of the season. Ole Werner’s side have started 2025 with a 4-2 defeat in Leipzig and a 3-3 draw at home to Heidenheim, where they conceded an equaliser in injury time. “It definitely won’t be easy – Bremen are playing good football this season and are really clinical in front of goal. However, if we play with passion and a fighting spirit, we’ve got a good chance,” stated Thorup.

Aside from long-term injury concerns Yusuf Kabadayi and Masaya Okugawa, Thorup will be without the suspended Frank Onyeka (five yellow cards) on Sunday. Mads Pedersen has been back in training since Monday, but Sunday will come too soon for the Danish full-back. Keven Schlotterbeck (thigh muscle injury), Robert Gumny (muscular problems) and Maximilian Bauer (concussion) are making good progress as they work their way back to full fitness. Fredrik Jensen, who has been out recently with a cold, will be available.
