Thorup: “It could’ve even ended 3-3”

Reaction to the draw against Eintracht Frankfurt

First Team 20.04.2025, 18:55

After a hard-fought 90 minutes, FC Augsburg’s encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt ended in a goalless draw on matchday 30. Read the players’ reaction to the result below.

Chrislain Matsima: “We played well today, and based on our performance in the first half, one point wasn’t quite enough. We should’ve used our chances better. Nevertheless, we kept a clean sheet, which speaks volumes about our defensive performance. We’re happy with the point for that reason and are feeling positive ahead of the next game in Leverkusen.”

Cédric Zesiger: “Unfortunately, we were lacking efficiency in our play today, a problem we experienced with our creativity going forward in other matches. We were in control of the game in the first half, which we should’ve used to our advantage. Frankfurt then started strong after the break and we let the game slip out of our hands. Everything was in our favour despite that, which is what’s even more frustrating. In the closing stages, however, we proved that we’re capable of holding our own against any team. We’ll chalk up the point as a step in the right direction.”

Finn Dahmen: “No one in the changing room is truly happy with the point. We played well in the first half, had control of the game, and even created a few chances. We aren’t, however, satisfied with the performance in the second half. We let too many chances slip away from us by losing the ball too easily. Our defensive recovery wasn’t good enough. In the end, we were also handed the bit of luck that we’d earned in recent weeks during some of Frankfurt’s chances. We’ll gladly take the point and will turn our focus to Leverkusen, where, after a recent strong run of form, we could deliver a solid performance.”

Mert Kömür: “I was naturally very happy to have been trusted in the starting line-up today, and am now eager to prove myself in every single game and training session. It wasn’t an easy match, and when you take the halves into account separately, we would have won the first. When you look at the game as a whole, however, we’re pleased to walk away from it with a point against one of the top three sides.”

Jess Thorup (FCA’s head coach): “We were the dominant team in the first half. We started strong, put the opposition under pressure, and regained possession consistently. Our main downfall today was that we didn’t capitalise on our chances. We didn’t use the momentum required to score a goal. We let the game slip away from us in the second half by making mistakes and losing possession in the midfield, which added fuel to the opposition’s fire. The game didn’t play out how I had wanted it to – Frankfurt had many counter attacks using their quick strikers. In the end, the game could’ve gone either way, and it could’ve even ended 3-3. However, all things considered, we earned a point against one of the top three teams.”

Dino Toppmöller (Eintracht Frankfurt’s head coach): “Our performance was weak in the first half. We weren’t good on the ball and invited Augsburg into our half by losing possession too easily. Nevertheless, Augsburg didn’t really have any clear-cut chances. We then reacted excellently in the second half and put in a solid performance. Following the disappointment of the Europa League on Thursday, it was important to play such a strong second half after a weak display before the break. We’ll take the point, and it was a deserved point on the whole. Augsburg were better in the first half, but we created more chances in the second half, though we can’t forget about the two huge opportunities that Augsburg had in front of goal."
