Switzerland and Greece are into the play-offs
Nine wins from ten games but still not through yet: Switzerland lost their winner-takes-all clash for direct World Cup qualification against Portugal and now must qualify via the play-offs. Greece also solidified second place in their group to keep their hopes of World Cup participation alive.
Portugal vs. Switzerland 2-0
The goal difference was all that split Portugal and Switzerland after ten qualification fixtures. Both Portugal and Switzerland won nine of their 10 matches and lost to one another once. The 2016 European Championships holders went into the lead thanks to a Johan Djourou own goal. André Silva doubled Portugal's lead later on to ensure Portugal topped the group. Marwin Hitz did not feature but Switzerland will have another opportunity to qualify for the 2018 World Cup as they will face another second placed team in the play-offs.Greece vs. Gibraltar 4-0
After a clear 4-0 win against Gibraltar, Greece - with FCA first teamer Konstantinos Stafylidis amongst their ranks - ensured second place in their qualification group which keeps their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup alive. Stafylidis played the entire 90 minutes and can qualify for the World Cup by winning their play-off.Saudi Arabien vs. Ghana 0-3 Ghana participated in a friendly against Saudi Arabia and Daniel Opare's Ghana team came out 3-0 winners. Opare himself came on as a substitute in the second half for the Black Stars.South Korea vs. Morocco 1-3
Dong-Won Ji played the whole game for South Korea and Ja-Cheol Koo came on in the 28th minute as a substitute. Oussama Tannane scored a brace before Ismail Haddad extended Morocco's lead but ex-Bundesliga player Heung-Min Son scored a penalty late on as the game ended 3-1 to Morocco.Paraguay vs. Venezuela 0-1
Venezuela ended Paraguay's dreams of World Cup qualification. Venezuela may have been bottom of the group but that did not prevent them from taking a 1-0 away from Paraguay. FCA's Sergio Córdova played until the 58th minute when he was substituted.- Tags:
