Spoils shared at home to Bielefeld
0-0 draw against Arminia Bielefeld
FC Augsburg shared the spoils with Arminia Bielefeld in a 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon. The point extends FCA’s gap on the drop zone.
Heiko Herrlich made two changes to the team that lost 1-0 against FC Schalke 04. Iago returned from his ankle injury, as did Tobias Strobl. Robert Gumny and Carlos Gruezo dropped to the bench.
It was an even start to the game, with both sides prioritising security on the ball over taking risks. Arminia looked the more structured side going forward, but FCA were equally alert, especially from their long-ball attempts. Going forward, Herrlich’s man gave up possession too easily to cause a threat.
The first big chance fell to Bielefeld around the half-hour mark. Andreas Voglsammer found himself 1v1 against Rafal Gikiewicz following a one-two with Fabian Klos, but couldn’t keep his attempt down (28'). At the other end, Marco Richter’s effort landed on the roof of the net (35'), while Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s header was kept out by Stefan Ortega in the Arminia goal (44').
Vargas passes up golden opportunity to win
Herrlich made two changes to start the second half, bringing on Reece Oxford and Gruezo for Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (knock) and Rani Khedira, who had already been cautioned once. There was little of the intensity that had defined the first half to be seen after the break. FCA had the bulk of possession, but lacked pace and composure up front. The same was true of Bielefeld, who recorded few chances of their own.
The majority of play took place in midfield, with highlights few and far between. The only exception was Ruben Vargas, who found himself on the end of the best chance of the half after going one-on-one with Ortega, following a sublime pass from Alfred Finnbogason. Vargas' shot was parried by the keeper, who kept his side in the game with strong foot save (78'). That would be the last good chance of the half.
In the end, it was a goalless draw at home for FCA, who are now six points ahead of Arminia. Next up, Augsburg will travel to face Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday (20th April, 20:30 CEST).
