Schmidt: “We need to fight for each other”
FCA prepare for their last home game of the year against Düsseldorf
FC Augsburg are heading into the last home game before the winter break feeling good, having won four of the last five matches in the league. Martin Schmidt’s men welcome Fortuna Düsseldorf to the WWK ARENA on Tuesday, 17th December (20:30 CET).
FCA have already given the fans a couple of early Christmas presents, with wins over Mainz (2-1) and Hoffenheim (4-2). Despite all the euphoria, head coach Martin Schmidt warns against complacency. Although Fortuna Düsseldorf are currently in the relegation zone,
It’s better to focus on the future than on the past.
However, FCA shouldn’t be afraid, either. The team have been putting in strong performances recently, especially at home. “We want to win this home game as well and continue on our path, which is far from over,” says Schmidt. Therefore, “it’s better to focus on the future than on the past.”
Lots of opportunities for rotation
Schmidt explains that the double game week with another match in Leipzig on Saturday “makes rotation the obvious choice.” And he has several opportunities to make changes: Ruben Vargas is back in the squad after his yellow card suspension but a number of other players have also been playing well recently. As such, the boss is faced with the tough decision of who to pick: “We need a skilful and lively team. I also don’t want to stop players who are currently in a good rhythm. The main thing is that, whatever the team is on the pitch, the players fight for each other and work well together. The fans have certainly seen how well the players have fought for each other in recent games and will be hoping for more of the same against Düsseldorf.
