FC Augsburg stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games with a draw against TSG Hoffenheim, though they missed the chance to record a third successive win. It finished 1-1 on Matchday 27 of the Bundesliga.
After the international break, Jess Thorup sent out the same team who were victorious last time out. Henri Koudossou returned to the squad after injury, but Mergim Berisha was not yet ready to play.
Hoffenheim started the match full of attacking intent, but there were few goalscoring chances early on. In the 18th minute, FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen saved from Marius Bülter. Bazoumana Touré had the best chance of the first half for the hosts, but his header struck the right post. FCA only threatened from long-range shots, but Thorup’s side stayed solid defensively.
Essende scores after 16 seconds of the second half
The second period began in sensational style. Samuel Essende, who replaced Phillip Tietz at the break, made it 1-0 just 16 seconds after kick-of. This was the fastest goal after the start of the second half in the Bundesliga since records began. Essende got on the end of a cross from Cedric Zesiger to volley home his sixth goal of the campaign (46’). FCA now looked to defend their lead, which they were managing well until the 70th minute, when Haris Tabakovic had a shot on the turn. The ball bounced off Chrislain Matsima and onto the arm of Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. Referee Tobias Reichel pointed to the spot, which was a very controversial decision. Andrej Kramarić made no mistake and calmly converted to make it 1-1 (71’).
This ended Finn Dahmen’s run of 683 minutes without conceding, and the match was now very open. It was a thrilling end to the game. Reichel awarded another penalty, even though Dahmen had clearly played the ball and made contact with Tabakovic afterwards. After speaking to his assistant though, the referee decided to overturn the decision (85’). Substitute Arne Maier then had an opportunity to give FCA the lead, but his shot was saved in the centre of the goal by Germany international Oliver Baumann (86’). The final whistle went shortly afterwards in Sinsheim.
