Oxford: "The trust they've placed in me feels good"
An interview with the FCA defender
Reece Oxford has fought to become a regular starter for FC Augsburg. In an interview, the 22-year-old spoke about having patience, the coaches trusting in him and making an important tackle during the game against 1. FC Union Berlin.
“When Heiko Herrlich came to FC Augsburg, he told me that I needed to be patient and that he believed in me,” said Reece Oxford. “So, that’s what I did, and I tried to implement what he was telling me and to continually improve.” This persistance has now paid off, as the Englishman has been able to establish himself within the team and has become a regular starter. Oxford summed it up by saying, “Of course it feels good to have the coaches place this trust in me. I think that I’m definitely on the right path.”
Oxford was just 20 years old when he joined FCA in 2019. He is full of praise for the club, saying “Augsburg are the perfect team, especially for young players. No matter where you come from, the environment here is ideal to continue developing.” Two years later, Oxford can play at a variety of positions, be it in midfield or in defence. The latter is where he feels most at home, and the 22-year-old has featured primarily in defence over the last few weeks.
Last weekend, there was one moment during the 2-1 win against Union Berlin that stood out. In injury time, Oxford calmly dispossed Cedric Teuchert in order to prevent him from going through on goal in what could have been a game-changing moment. “It may have looked like I was calm, but my heart was racing,” said Oxford. He had already been booked once during the match and knew “If I foul him now, then I’ll definitely be shown a second yellow and be sent off.” Oxford kept his cool and “In the end, I got the ball.”
