No points from 2-0 defeat in Freiburg

Good chances go to waste

First Team 21.03.2021, 19:59

FC Augsburg endured defeat in the final fixture of matchday 26. Despite a decent performance, the Fuggerstädter lost 2-0 away to SC Freiburg on Sunday evening. The Augsburg finishing was wayward, ensuring that we head home with no points to show for the effort.

After the 3-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, head coach Heiko Herrlich saw no reason to change the winning formula. He sent out the same starting XI that beat the Foals last week.

The confidence built up in that win was clear to see from the off. The Fuggerstädter set up high and put Freiburg under plenty of early pressure, but it was the hosts who were setting the early tempo. Baptiste Santamaria shot at Rafał Gikiewicz from close range, although the goal would not have counted due to dangerous play from a Freiburg man (6 '). The hosts kept plowing forwards and an unprepared Jeffrey Gouweleeuw was forced to head narrowly over his own bar not long after (16 ').

FCA grew into a hard-fought contest as time went on, and the chances duly came. The final touch was lacking, however. Marco Richter (18 '/ 22') and André Hahn (23 ') had long-range efforts before the latter headed onto the roof of the net (35'). The best chance of the half fell to László Bénes, who hit the ball just over the bar from a promising position (39 ').

Sallai scores the opener - Lienhart doubles down

After the change of ends, it was Freiburg who took command of the game - and they had an early goal to show for it. Christian Günter dribbled past several FCA players before giving it to Sallai, who hit a shot low into the corner to give Freiburg a 1-0 lead (51 '). Augsburg were undeterred by the setback and pressed for a quick reply. Richter tested Florian Müller from a tight angle (52 ') before Rani Khedira shot straight at the Freiburg' keeper (58 ').

The Freiburg shot-stopper couldn't complain about a lack of action early in the second half. A little past the hour mark, he had to be alert to keep out a free-kick from Caligiuri (66 '), but FCA weren't able to trouble the net after that. Instead, it was Freiburg who made it 2-0. Ermedin Demirovic shot against the post from a Günter free-kick and Philipp Lienhart was there to force the rebound over the line (79 '). The Fuggerstadt refused to give up but were unable to impact the final score.

The international break interrupts the fixture list before FCA's next match against Hoffenheim (Saturday, April 3rd at 15:30 CEST).
