Niederlechner and Uduokhai return to team training
Training gets under way ahead of the Rückrunde
2022 has not quite begun yet, but nevertheless, FC Augsburg are back on the training pitch to prepare for the start of the Rückrunde. Head coach Markus Weinzierl got his squad back to work on Thursday, after a few days off for Christmas.
“It was important for everybody to take a bit of a breather over Christmas,” said Weinzierl. “Despite the short length of the break, everyone received individual training plans so that they didn’t lose fitness and are able to get back to action straight away.” The first game of the Rückrunde comes on Saturday January 8th, as FCA travel to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (15:30 CET).
Head coach Weinzierl was happy to see two players return to training after long-term injuries in Florian Niederlechner and Felix Uduokhai, who were able to complete the full complement of work for the day. Alongside them, Alfred Finnbogason is also working on a return to the pitch, albeit training individually. He should be able to get back to working with the team next week. One absentee was Mads Pedersen, who is continuing to complete his recovery program in Denmark, along with the South American players in Iago, Carlos Gruezo and Sergio Cordova, who were allowed a slightly longer break. They will return to Augsburg at the start of next week.
Unfortunately, there were also a quartet of absentees due to Covid-19 tests. Goalkeeper Tomas Koubek returned a positive test, whereas tests from Daniel Klein, Reece Oxford and Niklas Dorsch all came back with inconclusive results. As a result, the four have all been placed in isolation at home, whilst the club coordinates with the local health authority for clarification.
