Maier: “We showed great character and determination”
Dortmund match reaction
Despite an impressive performance, FC Augsburg were narrowly beaten out in Dortmund in a game that saw all five of the club’s January signings get minutes. We gathered the reaction from the players and coaches.
Kelvin Yeboah: “It was a great game. We did a lot right, but we also made mistakes. It’s tough to be standing here without any points despite having scored three goals in Dortmund. Making my debut for FCA in a game like that is a special experience. We can take a lot of positives from the game, but we also know that we have to keep working hard.”
Arne Engels: “It was a great feeling to be in the starting line-up in my very first game. I tried to do my best and help the team. It’s a pity that our performance wasn’t rewarded with any points, but I’m convinced that we will pick up plenty of points if we continue to play like that in the coming weeks.”
Arne Maier: “I haven’t experienced a game like that before with so much back and forth. We came from behind on three separate occasions. We showed great character and determination. A real positive is how well the new signings have integrated in this first week and the first game. We want to produce this performance again when we face Borussia Mönchengladbach, only this time, we want to get the result we deserved.”
Enrico Maaßen: “It was a very good performance from the team. We had a young side out there and they did a fine job. It’s very frustrating when you go home empty-handed after a match like that. A 4-4 draw would have been amazing for us – unfortunately, it’s only the spectators who were able to enjoy it. You can’t stop everything against a side like Dortmund with the quality they have, but our high press, our counterattacking and our possessional play was solid. When you score three goals in Dortmund and create so many chances, you’re doing something right. However, we also conceded four goals today. We will keep working; we’re on the right path and so I’m full of optimism.”
Edin Terzic: “That was a spectacular game of football. Our first-half performance was good, but the 2-2 scoreline didn’t reflect that. We looked a little wild in the second half. We’re happy with the result, because we got the three points, but we’re not happy that it was such a closely fought match right until the end. We had to put in a lot of work to get our four goals.”
