Gouweleeuw: “We’re hugely disappointed”
Reaction to the Pokal defeat in Stuttgart
FCA are out of the DFB-Pokal. Here’s the post-match reaction from the narrow quarter-final defeat to VfB Stuttgart.
Marius Wolf: “We started the match well, but we were just missing that bit of coolness and cutting edge in the final third today. It’s always special when you do get through to the next round of the Pokal. That makes it even more of a disappointment that our journey has come to an end here. We need to keep our heads up though, and fully focus on the league now.”
Phillip Tietz: “We started well, and were then very unlucky to concede the opening goal. We weren’t bad after that, but we have to acknowledge that we didn’t create enough chances or deliver enough set pieces. We should have been more clinical with the opportunities we had. Overall, we’re very disappointed right now, even though we shouldn’t forget that VfB Stuttgart are a very good opponent. At the end of the day, we didn’t do enough.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Because we were on a good run, we came into the match full of confidence and started well. We let the opponents take hold of the game after conceding what was an unlucky goal. VfB were clinical in that moment. We were dreaming of the semi-finals, but you have to win to get there. We’re hugely disappointed. I didn’t think this was a game we should have lost.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “We pressed the opponents early on and put them under pressure. We were good in the first 25 minutes and won the ball back on many occasions. The problem was that we created too few chances, because the final ball often wasn’t good enough. Then, we were unlucky to concede. It was a situation where we should really have cleared the ball. In the second half, we made some changes to the personnel and formation to try and turn it around. Sadly, that didn’t work, although we had chances, for example through Mert. In the end though, we’ve gone out of the Pokal, and there won’t be a second chance.”
Sebastian Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart head coach): “This was an important match. We didn’t start well. We improved after the first chance for Deniz and had our best period of the match after the decisive goal. It continued like that in the second half, but we weren’t able to add that second goal. The match then became more open, and Augsburg had a big opportunity through Kömür. Other than that, we didn’t concede many chances, and I have to give credit to my team for that. They showed their maturity, which is what you have to do in a knockout game.”
