Maier: “We did what we needed to do”

The reaction to the 4-1 win against Viktoria Berlin

FC Augsburg progressed to the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a 4-1 win over Viktoria Berlin in the capital. Here’s what the coach and players had to say after the game.

Arne Maier: “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy against a Regionalliga side eager to cause an upset. When we went behind, though, we kept calm. That being said, we know that we can still improve. Of course, it was nice for me to be back playing here in Berlin and reach the next round of the Pokal. Last year, we got knocked out in the first round – this year, we did what we needed to do.”

Elvis Rexhbecaj: “We’re professional enough to not get worked up after going behind early on. Even before half time, we had the chances to complete the turnaround, which we did after the break. At the end of the day, it’s a win in a competitive fixture and it means we’re in the second round.”

Jess Thorup: “Going behind after four minutes obviously isn’t the start we were hoping for. But we stayed patient and had chances to turn the scoreline around before the break. After we took the lead, there were ten minutes where we thought that it was in the bag, but we could have gone up another gear and sealed the deal even earlier. I’m happy that 1,500 Augsburg fans travelled to watch us. It was a good game for us ahead of our first Bundesliga game of the season against Bremen next week.”
