Maaßen: "We played a great game up until the red card”

Post-match reaction following 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig.

First Team 22.10.2022, 19:25

Six goals, one red card – FC Augsburg’s 3-3 draw with RB Leipzig will certainly live in the memory of those who witnessed it. Read on for all the post-match reaction from both camps from the WWK ARENA.

Mads Pedersen:
"We played well for 70 minutes, and looked strong. After the red card, we should have defended better as a team, and it should never be the case that we concede three goals. We can’t use fatigue as an excuse, just because we happened to face Bayern München in midweek. In those closing moments, it’s all about your head and heart.”

Florian Niederlechner: "Up until the red card, Leipzig had relatively few chances and we were playing well at home. The red card was the turning point, because it knocked us off our game. It’s been a tiring week, and Leipzig were able to bring in great players like Nkunku and Olmo. We weren’t able withstand the pressure anymore. Nevertheless, something like that cannot be allowed to happen.”

Ermedin Demirović: "It’s a tough draw to take and it’s hard to believe it happened. We were better than Leipzig in several areas, were clinical and scored three times. I’m fuming that we didn’t win the game. We need to be able to defend the lead and see it through, and be better in the closing stages.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: "It was a very, very good game from us. Like in previous weeks, we were courageous, made life difficult for our opponents and looked as though we were in control. The turning point was the red card, and we need to learn to keep our emotions in check. We need to learn from situations like that, both as individuals and as a team. Overall, we’re on a good path – we’ve proven that in recent weeks.”

Enrico Maaßen: "We played a great game up until the red card. The lads were giving it everything and it was a high-risk game in the first half, because we were pressing hard and taking risks. We were deservedly in front at the break, and then scored to make it 2-0 and 3-0 in the second half. From that point on, we cannot allow ourselves to be provoked like that. It was a deserved sending off, and that moment was a real turning point in the game. We had a two-goal lead up until the final two minutes of the game, and we need to be better organised on both their goals at the end. It’s extremely frustrating to not have won tonight.”

Marco Rose: "We had expected to come up against a very intense Augsburg press, and that it would be difficult to get into the final third and play our game. We had come up with a couple of solutions, but were often lacking that final pass or the play was broken up by Augsburg. Emil Forsberg had a great chance to score, but then we lost control of the game and conceded a penalty as well as two more goals from set pieces. Then came the red card, and we were able to get back in the game and take advantage. Augsburg were defending deep, so we were able to make use of the space and score three goals. Of course we would have liked to have won here, but we will take the point.”
