Maaßen: ”My team gave everything today”
Match reaction to the Dortmund defeat
FC Augsburg had to play most of the 3-0 defeat against to Borussia Dortmund a man down, but the focus now turns to the final fixture against Gladbach. Here is the match reaction.
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We started well, but then the red card undid all of that. It’s a harsh call, in my opinion. Despite that, we fought back hard, and continued to do so after going 1-0 down, but when you don’t take your chances, then any game against BVB is going to be tough. However, we’re still in control of our own fate and need to give it everything in Gladbach in order to stay up. The fans were incredible today, their noise and support really pushed us on.”
Niklas Dorsch: “The red card was absolutely the turning point in the game. We even had chances after that, but we didn’t take them, something which you have to do against a team as strong as Dortmund. There’s still an awful lot to play for in the final game, but we need to remain positive and do all we can to maintain our Bundesliga status against Gladbach. We can’t afford to look at what others are doing, but instead try to decide our own fate. It’s been a season of highs and lows, but we have had some good days at home this season. We just need to pull out a strong away performance next week.”
Tomáš Koubek: "I’m a bit frustrated because we still had opportunities to get back into it even after we went a goal down. Even with eleven it’s difficult against Dortmund and playing with ten for 50 minutes is even more tough. Despite that, we gave it everything and fought until the end. I’m still confident we’ll stay up. We want to go to Gladbach and put in a strong performance.”
Enrico Maaßen: “My team gave it all today, the key moment was the red card which was very harsh. Until we conceded, we defended passionately, and Ivan Cardona had a huge chance after their goal. It was clear we weren’t going to get many chances, which means you simply have to take the one or two that you get. In the end, we weren’t able to get a result against this team full of individual quality, especially after we went a man down, and also because we didn’t quite get our pressing quite right. It adds a bit of pressure on the Gladbach game, but also long as the lads keep calm in front of goal and believe themselves, we’ll be okay.”
Edin Terzic: “It was an extremely difficult game for us, we showed a great reaction and put in a great performance. In the first half, we couldn’t get a clear shot on goal or make the final pass. The game changed after the red card, and then it became about making the opponent tired and finding the full backs quickly. In the end, it was a good performance, because not many teams come to Augsburg and win 3-0. Therefore, we’re very happy with today’s result and our position in the table.”
