Maaßen: "Leipzig were really clinical"
Post-match reaction from Leipzig
FC Augsburg came close to securing a point in a 3-2 defeat at Leipzig on Saturday, but couldn’t manage a repeat of the scoreline earlier this season. Here is the post-match reaction.
Felix Uduokhai: “Leipzig possess so much pace and we struggled with that initially. We got stuck in more after the break and defended better too. We believed after getting one goal back and almost got an equaliser late on. Today was my first game back, I wanted to help the team right away. We have to win against Stuttgart now. We need to take the positives from today’s game and then get up for a great Friday night at a sold-out WWK Arena.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We started well with the early goal, but Leipzig were extremely clinical. It was disappointing to concede three goals from just four shots. We fought hard in the second half, however we didn’t get our reward. You will automatically be dragged into the relegation battle if you don’t pick up points. I’m annoyed to be missing the Stuttgart game, but I have lots of confidence in the team and believe they will get the win without me.”
Julian Baumgartlinger: “Taking the lead early on was the perfect start, but we unfortunately couldn’t defend that advantage for long. We still believed in ourselves in the second half, despite trailing 3-1, and got back in the game. It’s a shame that we couldn’t complete the comeback with the one or two decent chances we had in the closing stages.”
Tomáš Koubek: “Leipzig showed their quality today. We weren’t decisive enough in three moments in the box. The second half was better, we tried all we could but it wasn’t enough in the end. Friday is an important game in the context of the relegation battle. We have to be at our best and want to win the game.”
Enrico Maaßen: “We started really well and scored a lovely goal. Unfortunately, we then endured a period where Leipzig were strong and extremely clinical. You need a bit of luck on your side to get something in Leipzig, and we didn’t have any today. We gave our all and showed a great mentality despite our absentees. I was hoping we could make it 3-3 right until the final whistle, just like they did in the reverse fixture.”
Marco Rose: “We’re pleased with the three points. We showed a good reaction after going behind early on and scored three nice goals. I told the lads at half time that we were a bit sloppy at times in the final third, despite our lead. The first five to ten minutes after the break were okay, but we didn’t manage to seal the win and invited them back onto us. As a result, Augsburg were close to an equaliser late on. It was an open game and we need to improve in the coming weeks if we’re to reach our goals.”
