Gruezo increases gap – Günther gets off to a good start
FCA first-team players on international break
Carlos Gruezo and Lasse Günther recently featured for their national teams and both can be happy with their side’s first result of the international break.
Carlos Gruezo played the full 90 minutes as Ecuador won 1-0 against Venezuela thanks to a Piero Hincapie winner, who plays for league rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen (41’). The wins builds Ecuador’s gap ahead of fifth place to four points, and their next match is against Chile (Tuesday 16th November, 1:15 CET), who are just one place behind them in the table.
Lasse Günther was just as successful playing for the Germany U19s as they began their qualifying campaign for the European Championship in Romania with a 4-1 victory over the Faroe Islands. Günther started the game and played the majority of the match, coming off in the 81st minute. Germany’s goals came courtesy of Mesut Kesik (3’), Emrehan Gedikli (73’), Anton Kade (79’) and Armindo Sieb (90’), but the Faroe Islands did equalise in the 53rd minute through Aki Samuelsen. The win takes the national youth side to first in the group table, and their next test comes in the form of Russia on Sunday (13th November, 13:00 CET).
Andi Zeqiri and Ruben Vargas’ first game of the international break with Switzerland is against European champions Italy on Friday (12th November, 20:45 CET). The teams are level on points in Group C, so this is a crucial match in determining the top positions of the group. Robert Gumny and Poland will also face Andorra on the same day (20:45 CET), and they are aiming to, at the least, retain second spot in Group I, and possibly draw level on points with current leaders England with a win.
