Gouweleeuw: “That was an important point”

FC Augsburg rescued a 1-1 draw in a tough encounter away at St. Pauli thanks to a late strike from Mert Kömur. The point extends FCA's unbeaten run to four games. Read all the reaction from Hamburg:

Mert Kömür: “I’m happy that I could help the team. It was a tough game because St. Pauli were so compact in defence. For the goal, I just tried to focus on the ball – there were a lot of players in the box. To hit it so cleanly is obviously amazing. In the end, we can be satisfied with a point.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “That was an important point. It wasn’t easy to play here, St. Pauli have a solid defence, but we also weren’t dangerous enough going forward. We came out stronger after the break and scored with our first and only real chance. We also defended better in the second half, so I think a draw is a fair result.”

Alexis Claude-Maurice: “St. Pauli put us under a lot of pressure with their energy, and it was tough for us to break through. It wasn’t a great football match, but we got the bare minimum from it – a point. But that was all.”

Jess Thorup: “In the first half, St. Pauli were clearly the better team. They created more chances and were solid at the back. We improved after the break and could control the game better, especially after the subs came on. Seeing an academy player like Mert Kömür score the equaliser makes it even sweeter. Based our performance in the second half, we deserved the point. That’s four games unbeaten now, and we want to keep building on that.”

Alexander Blessin (St. Pauli head coach): “Of course, we’re frustrated to have conceded a late equaliser. We started the game really well and deserved to be ahead at half time. But after the break, we sat deeper and became too passive. They equalised late on, which is tough to take because we defended well for most of the match. Still, it’s a positive that we didn’t lose our heads after the setback and managed to take a point from the game.”
