FCA win 2-1 in home game against Gladbach

Second win of the season

First Team 04.10.2024, 22:29

Three points under the lights! FC Augsburg came away with a 2-1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Bundesliga matchday 6. Keven Schlotterbeck and debutant Alexis Claude-Maurice scored the goals.

FCA head coach Jess Thorup made only one change to the side who lost in Leipzig, with Steve Mounié starting upfront alongside Phillip Tietz in the place of Ruben Vargas, who missed out with an ankle injury.

FCA were called upon defensively in the game’s early stages, with the visitors playing the ball around nicely and controlling the game. In the 18th minute, FCA had their first opening after Gladbach’s goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas mishit a clearance to Dimitris Giannoulis, but the Greece international’s shot from a tight angle only hit the support behind the goal. Shortly afterwards, Tim Kleindienst, who has just been called up to the Germany squad for the first time, dragged a shot just wide of the far post (31’).

Meanwhile, Thorup’s side grew into the game. Giannoulis tested Nicolas with a volley which he parried behind (38’), and it was the following corner that brought about the lead. A poor Gladbach clearance found its way to Keven Schlotterbeck, who controlled the ball on his chest before hammering a volley just under the crossbar – already his second goal of the season! Shortly before half time, Kristijan Jakić’s shot from distance was saved by Nicolas (43’), meaning FCA went into half time at a sold-out WWK ARENA with a slender lead.

Claude-Maurice scores on his debut

The first chance of the second half went the way of Tomáš Čvančara, but FCA goalkeeper Nediljko Labrović showed lightning-fast reactions to prevent a goal (47’). In the 57th minute, Thorup brough on fresh legs, with academy product Henri Koudossou coming on, as did Alexis Claude-Maurice for his Bundesliga debut. It only took the Frenchman 8 minutes to make his mark and double the lead! Frank Onyeka went on a promising run towards the box, with the ball then falling to Claude-Maurice on the edge of the box, who cut onto his right foot and shot, with a slight deflection carrying the ball into the back of the net.

Moments later, Phillip Tietz had a chance to make it 3-0, but his header following a precise cross from Giannoulis was too central (70’). Even with Schlotterbeck having to leave the field through injury, the defence stayed firm – up until the 71st minute, with Kleindienst pulling one back for Gladbach from a corner. FCA didn’t allow this to force them back, and continued looking to play forward. They relied on Labrović to make one more crucial save, parrying away a dangerous header from Robin Hack (79’) and with that securing a second win of the season.

This result means that FCA initially climb into eleventh place ahead of the international break. After that will be an away game against SC Freiburg (Saturday, 19th October, 15.30 CEST).
