Finnbogason and Framberger score for Augsburg
FC Augsburg have made successful use of the international break by beating 1. FC Heidenheim 2-1 in a friendly game. 1000 fans saw the red-green-whites go into the break 2-0 to the good, before the home side got one back in the 70th minute.
With several players off representing their countries, head coach Markus Weinzierl made several changes to the squad which played in the Bundesliga against Bayer 04 Leverkusen last weekend. A recovered Alfred Finnbogason made a return to the pitch as FCA captain, along with Raphael Framberger and Mads Pedersen. Dominic Schmidt was promoted to the first team from the under-23s for the game, as fellow central defender Felix Uduokhai missed out due to muscle problems, as did André Hahn and Arne Maier. Maurice Malone, who was loaned to Heidenheim from FCA this week, started for the hosts.
FCA found the net in the 14th minute, after a string of corners. Mads Pedersen’s corner, the third in quick succession, was flicked on by Dominic Schmidt, which then landed at Finnbogason’s knee at the back post for him to force the ball home and give the away side the lead. Following several more chances, FCA doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. A counter attack saw Florian Niederlechner find Framberger, who sprinted towards goal and finish the move to make it 2-0 to Augsburg. The remainder of the first 45 consisted of Augsburg having the upper hand but creating few scoring chances, so the teams went into the break with FCA two goals to the good.
Coach Weinzierl made one change at half time, with Tim Civeja coming in for Iago. The home side were improved in the second period, despite Augsburg creating several chances, including Frank Schmidt hitting the post (50’). After this warning, Heidenheim grew further into the half and got their reward in the 70th minute when a cross from the right fount Jonas Föhrenbach who found the net. This gave some impetus to the home side, who sought to level the game and created some good chances. Despite their hard work, the Augsburg defence stayed strong and let nothing else past them for the rest of the game to earn the win and head back to Bavaria with a task completed successfully.
FC Augsburg’s next game will take place in the Bundesliga on Saturday 11th September (15:30 CEST), when they travel to the capital to face 1. FC Union Berlin.
