FCA share spoils with Freiburg

First Team 15.02.2020, 15:31

A week on from the defeat in Frankfurt, FCA shared a point with SC Freiburg in a 1-1 draw. Augsburg took the lead in the first half, but were pegged back by a fortunate equaliser shortly after the restart.

Martin Schmidt made two changes to the team that were beaten 5-0 by Eintracht last weekend. Iago returned from duty with the Brazil U23s, while Stephan Lichtsteiner was also back in the starting XI; Felix Uduokhai and Ruben Vargas began on the bench.

It took a while for the game to come to life, with Freiburg dominating possession in the early stages, albeit without any notable chances. Vincenzo Grifo (10’) forced a save from Tomàš Koubek with a direct free kick, while Lucas Höler headed wide from a Jonathan Schmid cross (23’).

Lichtsteiner forced off injured – Max opens the scoring

FCA sat deep and gave little away, but similarly struggled at the other end conceding possession far too easily.  But as the game progressed, FCA grew more and more confident in their attacking play and began to test Alexander Schwolow’s goal. Marco Richter cut inside and struck goalwards, but saw his effort rattle the upright (25’). Schmidt was forced into a change on the half hour mark; Raphael Framberger coming on for the injured Lichtsteiner.

But as the game, which was place mostly in the of the park, edged towards half time, FCA struck clinically to take the lead (38’). Augsburg broke on a lightning quick counter from a Freiburg corner, the ball finding its way wide to Iago. The left back whipped a low cross into the box, where Philipp Max was waiting to slot past Schwolow – his seventh strike of the season.

Haberer equaliser – and fluffs chance to win

It didn’t take Freiburg long to level after the restart. A free kick from deep found its way to Janik Harberer, whose speculative shot took a wild deflection past a helpless Koubek (51’). FCA were unfazed by the equaliser and sought to re-establish their lead, but continued to lack the required precision in the final third. Freiburg had a golden chance to take the lead in the 67th minute, but goalscorer Haberer fired narrowly wide in a one-on-one against Koubek.

Koubek was at hand shortly after to deny Christian Günter, while Richter was unable to hit the target at the other end (77’). With side willing to commit in search of a winner, the game fizzled out in the dying stages, both teams happy to settle for a point.

Augburg thus remain unbeaten at home against Freiburg (W3, D5). Next up in the Bundesliga, FCA travel to Leverkusen on Sunday, 23rd February.
