FC Augsburg made the short trip to Munich on matchday 2 in the Bundesliga. Despite posing a tough challenge for the record champions, Enrico Maaßen’s side fell to a 3-1 defeat.
FC Augsburg started bravely, doing well to deal with Bayern’s early forays into the final third. Serge Gnabry was able to break through in the 11th minute, but Arne Engels was ready to block a shot from the Germany international at the key moment.
The moments that followed saw FCA record good chances of their own. Ermedin Demirović nearly netted the opener for the visitors in the 27th minute, but sent his attempt just wide of the left post.
The hosts were then fortunate to take the lead in the 32nd minute. After an initial strong save from Finn Dahmen to deny Leroy Sané, the ball bounced off of Felix Uduokhai and rolled into the back of the net. Minutes later, FCA were dealt another set-back after Niklas Dorsch was judged to have handled the ball inside the box. Harry Kane stepped up to take the penalty for the hosts and made it 2-0 (40’).
Beljo scores a consolation goal
Augsburg came out of the dressing room on the hunt for a goal of their own, with Mergim Berisha nearly getting off a shot in the 52nd minute. Ruben Vargas then looked to catch goalkeeper Sven Ulreich off guard with a long ball, but the shot-stopper was able to parry his effort.
Dahmen was forced into two quick saves in the 63rd and 64th minute, pushing two shots wide of the posts. Kane was able to net his second goal of the day in the 69th minute, getting on the end of a pass down the right wing and pushing the ball past Dahmen to make it 3-0.
FCA were able to get on the board in the final minutes of the game, as Demirović picked out Dion Beljo in the box, who rounded Ulreich before passing the ball into the back of the net.
Next weekend, FC Augsburg will host VfL Bochum on Saturday afternoon at the WWK Arena (15:30 CEST).
