After a strong first-half performance, FC Augsburg were beaten 2-0 in Munich on Matchday 25. FC Bayern took the lead after 53 minutes and FCA passed up the chance to go level before their lead was doubled in stoppage time.

Head coach Martin Schmidt made four changes to the starting XI from last week’s 3-2 defeat to Gladbach. Captain Daniel Baier led the team out again after serving his yellow card suspension and Andreas Luthe started between the sticks. Eduard Löwen was given the nod again after his starting debut last weekend while Raphael Framberger and Iago joined the defence.

Few chances in the first half

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts: Thomas Müller scooped the ball over FCA’s back line, but Jeffrey Gouweleeuw got to it before Coutinho (6’). Moments later, the same two Bayern players were denied again. Then it was Augsburg’s turn to ask some questions, but the answer on three occasions was Manuel Neuer. Bayern started to enjoy more control of the game, however they were left frustrated at the hands of a rigid FCA defence, keeping things goalless. With just seconds remaining in the first half, Thomas Müller missed the first major chance of the game from close range. 0-0 the half-time score.

Neither team made changes at half time, meaning the game proceeded in a similar fashion. FCA’s lack of threat going forward was eventually punished by Jerome Boateng, who played a perfectly weighted ball over the top for Müller who opened the scoring on the volley (53’).

Luthe saves FCA, Neuer saves Bayern.

Once in front, Bayern raised the tempo, with Augsburg calling on Luthe more than once to keep the visitors in the game. In the 80th minute, his outfield teammates almost repaid him: Finnbogason and Vargas worked the ball down the left to provide Florian Niederlechner with the golden opportunity, but the equaliser went begging. Eight minutes later, he appeared to have redeemed himself as he broke through and stuck the ball past Manuel Neuer, only for the linesman to raise his flag and rule the goal out. Soon after thinking they’d equalised, FCA saw the hosts double their lead and put the game to bed courtesy of some link-up play between Gnabry and Goretzka.

Augsburg’s next game is on Sunday 15th March at 18:00 CET at home to Wolfsburg.
