FCA lose 2-0 against Frankfurt

Defeat in last Bundesliga game of 2020

First Team 19.12.2020, 17:30

FC Augsburg have lost the last Bundesliga game of the year – a 2-0 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt. After the teams traded shots in an open game, Frankfurt went ahead through an own-goal and made it two late on.

Head coach Heiko Herrlich made three changes from the 1-0 win against Arminia Bielefeld. Iago returned to the starting eleven after recovering from injury, whilst Florian Niederlechner and Alfred Finnbogason started the game up front. Reece Oxford, Tobias Strobl and Michael Gregoritsch were on the bench.

After a hectic start, Niederlechner had the first chance of the game but his shot went straight to Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (10’). At the other end, Felix Uduokhai blocked an effort from André Silva (11’). Eintracht had more control but FCA were defensively solid and posed a constant threat on the counter. After a driven shot from Filip Kostic went narrowly wide of the far post (18’), Niederlechner had the best chance of the game. After the attacker won the ball against Tuta, Niederlechner ran through on Trapp, but Tuta returned to make a last-second interception (21’).

Trapp saves effort from Finnbogason – Durm hits the post

The game continued to be an end-to-end affair. Kostic lacked the required precision for two headers from good positions (26’, 34’), whilst Finnbogason squandered a great chance to take the lead. The Iceland international’s shot from close range was saved by Trapp in the 28th minute.

After FCA had kept Eintracht at a safe distance from goal, the away side found gaps in the Augsburg defence towards the end of the first half. Erik Durm sent a curling effort into the post (37’) before Silva missed a golden opportunity (39’). Amin Younes was unable to find the back of the net with two chances late in the half (43’, 45’), so the sides went into the break level.

Framberger scores an own goal – Ilsanker finishes things off

The game continued in the same fashion in the second half. Kostic forced Gikiewicz into making a good save (48’), before a Richter chip failed to beat Trapp (50’). Soon after, Frankfurt took the lead with some help from the hosts. Silva put the ball into the centre from the wing, and Gouweleeuw’s clearance rebounded off Framberger and found its way into the goal – 1-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt (53’).

Frankfurt kept piling on the pressure. Framberger prevented Kostic from scoring (61’), before a Silva effort went narrowly wide (66’). Younes took a shot on but it was no problem for Gikiewicz (72’). FCA needed a little time after the opener to regroup, but then they came forward with renewed energy. A Richter shot almost crept in, and then Augsburg had a decent claim for a penalty as Iago was pulled to the ground in the penalty area (73’). Shortly after, however, Eintracht finished things off. Steven Zuber set up Stefan Ilsanker in the box, who fired an effort past Gikiewicz to make it 2-0 (87’).

So FCA lost the final Bundesliga game of the year, but there is still one game left before 2020 comes to a close. FCA host RasenBallsport Leipzig on Tuesday in the second round of the DFB-Pokal (22nd December, 18:30 CET).
