FCA beat Würzburger Kickers 2-0

First Team 14.07.2018, 19:36
FC Augsburg continued pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win over Würzburger Kickers. 1907 spectators got to watch on as FC Augsburg ran out in their brand-new white home kit, with traditional stripes. After a high-tempo start, it was Kickers who had the game’s first notable chance, breaking quickly from a Philipp Max corner at the other end, but failing to test FCA keeper Fabian Giefer. 15 minutes in, it was clear that both sides were looking to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes. Patrick Göbel had the next chance for the Würzburg side, fizzing a cross just wide of the Augsburg goal, before Dennis Mast found the side netting thanks to a well-positioned Giefer. Although most of the chances were falling to Kickers, the game was evenly poised at the half hour mark. At the other end, Max fired goalwards from distance, but Würzburg’s Leon Bätge plucked the ball out the air. The opener soon followed. A well-struck Max free kick finding Julian Schieber, who rose highest to head FCA 1-0 in front going into the break. An almost completely new Augsburg team emerged for the second half and were immediately put under pressure by the latest Würzburg attack. A huge chance fell for Fabio Kaufmann, but once again Giefer stood strong to protect the Augsburg goal. The lead was doubled in the 54th minute, once again from a free kick. With Max no longer on the pitch, Jonathan Schmid stepped up to smash home directly for 2-0. Würzburg refused to back down and continued to pressure the Augsburg goal, but Giefer came out on top to keep the clean sheet.
