A point away at the league’s second-placed side
On Matchday 13 of the Bundesliga, FC Augsburg picked up a deserved point away at Eintracht Frankfurt. After a goalless first half, the match came to life with a goalfest in the second half. It eventually finished 2-2.
FCA head coach Jess Thorup made two changes to his starting eleven from the nerve-wracking Pokal win in midweek. Nediljko Labrović returned in goal after being rested, while Finn Dahmen was not in the squad due to shoulder issues. Elvis Rexhbecaj also came into the starting line-up.
FCA, who wore black armbands in memory of Bernd Siegmund, were put under pressure by a strong Frankfurt attack from the start. After just 15 seconds, Keven Schlotterbeck was shown the yellow card for a foul on Frankfurt’s top scorer Omar Marmoush. Jess Thorup’s green-clad side grew into the game as time went on however. In the 17th minute, former Frankfurt man Marius Wolf went on a solo run into the penalty area, but was denied by a last-ditch challenge.
The game had to be stopped on multiple occasions, including after a clash in the air between Phillip Tietz and Rasmus Kristensen (28’), after which both players had to play on with bandaged heads. Just before half time, FCA goalkeeper Labrović showed all of his quality when he made a fantastic stop to turn Ansgar Knauff’s dangerous low effort around the post (45’).
Frankfurt made a strong start to the second half, and the hosts took the lead in the 55th minute. Hugo Ekitiké nodded home a well-placed header after Ansgar Knauff had flicked a cross from the left perfectly into his path. FCA were not behind for long though. Elvis Rexhbecaj played a lovely pass into Phillip Tietz, who struck it through the legs of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from a tight angle to equalise. The goal was checked for offside, but the bandaged forward’s strike stood after a short delay.
In the 67th minute, Thorup made his first changes as he sent on Arne Maier, as well as Robert Gumny, who made his return after eight months out with injury. Four minutes later, FCA completed the turnaround. Maier tried a shot from around 18 yards out which Trapp could only parry, and Essende was in the right place at the right time to turn in his side’s second. Frankfurt though levelled quickly. Uzun let fly from around 16 yards out, and the ball took a deflection off Tietz to land in the corner of the net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance (74’).
It remained an enthralling game and in injury time, during which former Frankfurt man Kristijan Jakić and Oscar Højlund also had to have their heads bandaged, Labrović made another excellent save to deny Jean-Mattéo Bahoya and make sure of the point for FCA (90+3’).
FCA have another difficult task ahead next week. On Saturday, 14th December (15:30 CET), the Fuggerstädter will host Bayer 04 Leverkusen in their final home game of 2024.
