2,000 fans in attendance
In the third game of preseason, FC Augsburg conceded for the first time in 2022/23. The Fuggerstädter played out a 1-1 draw with SV Sandhausen in front of 2,000 fans in Zusmarshausen
Head coach Enrico Maaßen set up with a back three, as he had previously done in the friendlies against TSV Schwaben Augsburg (5-0) and VfB Eichstätt (5-0). André Hahn and Ricardo Pepi continued their partnership in attack. New signing Ermedin Demirović, who has recently arrived from SC Freiburg, was not involved.
Augsburg dictated the play from the first whistle with captain Jeffrey Gouweeleuw looking especially dangerous with his probing diagonal passes. Chances were at a premium though – until the 37th minute, when Frederik Jensen was brought down on the edge of the box. Daniel Caligiuri took charge of the free-kick, curling it to the left of the wall and in for the opening goal. The Fuggerstädter almost piled on before half-time but Hahn shot at Sandhausen goalie Patrick Drewes when through one-on-one.
Maaßen made seven changes at the break. Tomáš Koubek replaced Rafał Gikiewicz between the sticks. The game sadly came to a premature end for Lasse Günther, who was replaced by Aaron Zehnter after feeling a complaint in his thigh (66’). The first shot on target of the second half came from a defender: Frederik Winther charged through the midfield and let fly from distance. Drewes tipped the ball around the post (64’). Koubek looked impressive at the other end as he saved a shot from Christian Kinsombi with a strong left hand (70’).
Sandhausen, whose campaign in the 2. Bundesliga will begin next week, made a triple change as they chased the game. FCA old boy Alexander Esswein was among those to enter the fray. Just as it looked like Augsburg were going to see out a narrow 1-0 win, the second-tier side made the breakthrough. Matej Pulkrab was set free down the left and fired into the far corner (84’). With that, the game ended 1-1.
On Sunday, Augsburg will travel to their training camp in Scheffau (Austria). There are two games planned: one on Wednesday, 13th July (18.00 CEST) against Dynamo Budweis and another on Sunday, 17th July (16.00 CEST) against Al Duhail SC.
