FC Augsburg made it eight games unbeaten and four successive clean sheets with a point against SC Freiburg. Despite a number of chances, the match ended goalless in front of 29,651 spectators at the WWK ARENA.
Jess Thorup elected not to change a winning team, after FCA had continued their unbeaten run with a 3-0 win in Mönchengladbach last time out.
Augsburg started well under the floodlights, winning three corners in the first two minutes. Most of the action in the first 20 took place in the centre of the park, as both teams looked to gain control of the ball and launch attacks. There were few chances early on, however.
The first big opportunity came in the 24th minute. After a cross from the left, Freiburg’s Grifo was unable to clear, and Frank Onyeka let fly from around 16 yards out. The ball hit goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, struck the crossbar and went wide. A few minutes later, Dimitris Giannoulis had a chance after good work by Fredrik Jensen, but his strike from inside the penalty area went over the bar (27’).
FCA remained alert and left SCF with very little space to attack. Phillip Tietz had the final chance of the second half, when he fired the ball into the arms of Atubolu after Alexis Claude-Maurice’s pull-back towards the penalty spot (45’).
Dahmen breaks Hitz’s record
Both teams came out for the second half unchanged, and it was a similar affair on the pitch as in the first period. When the clock reached the 56th minute, a new piece of FCA history was written. Finn Dahmen has now gone over 400 minutes without conceding, overtaking Marwin Hitz’s previous Bundesliga club record from 2016. Our number one is set on continuing this run too, denying substitute Niklas Beste in a one-on-one after the Freiburg player found himself through on goal (63’).
Both the hosts and the visitors piled on the pressure in search of the breakthrough. Kristijan Jakić tried his luck for FCA with a strike from distance, while Tietz had two more chances, firstly with a header and then with a shot from inside the box a few minutes later (66’). Steve Mounié had the best opportunity of the match just before the end. After a cross from Arne Maier, Mounié’s volley hit the inside of the post and bounced out. The match then finished without either side finding a winner.
