Two late goals, two penalties and two VAR interventions
Though they made life difficult for FC Bayern over long periods in the game, two goals in injury time helped subject FC Augsburg to a 3-0 defeat on Friday evening.
After returning from the international break, FC Augsburg got Matchday 11 of the Bundesliga underway with a visit to Munich to take on the league leaders.
Jess Thorup made just one change from the 0-0 draw against Hoffenheim last time out. Elvis Rexhbecaj, who missed that game due to suspension, came in for Kristijan Jakić after the latter picked up a knock on international duty. Ruben Vargas returned to the squad for the first time since his ankle injury.
The record German champions attempted to pile on the pressure from the start, but Thorup’s side remained compact and disciplined defensively. The Fuggerstädter’s perfect positional play prevented the hosts from advancing into the penalty area and creating big chances.
In the 26th minute, Alexis Claude-Maurice registered the visitors’ first effort on goal with a header. Shortly afterwards, there was mayhem in the Augsburg penalty area as Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala both tested Nediljko Labrović from close range within the space of a few seconds, but the Croatian goalkeeper saved well on both occasions.
Jess Thorup then had to make a change in the 38th minute due to injury. Dimitris Giannoulis was unable to continue and had to be replaced by Mads Pedersen. Labrović was again called into action in first-half injury time, but denied Leon Goretzka to keep his team level at the break.
The Bayern pressure continued to grow in the second period. In the 61st minute, VAR intervened after the hosts appealed for a handball following a corner. Referee Schlager awarded a penalty kick after reviewing the footage, and Kane stepped up to give his side the lead. This opening goal put the team from Munich firmly in control.
In the 78th minute, there was a positive moment for FCA as Ruben Vargas made his return after recovering from an ankle injury, and he brought renewed energy to Augsburg. Bayern showed their class again in the final stages however. In injury time, VAR again awarded a penalty, this time for a foul, and Kane again converted to make it 2-0. Keven Schlotterbeck was also given his marching orders for a second yellow card, and will consequently miss FCA’s home game against VfL Bochum. Kane then completed his hat-trick just before the final whistle, getting on the end of a cross to wrap up the scoring at 3-0.
Next Saturday (15:30 CET), FC Augsburg host VfL Bochum in their Matchday 12 fixture at the WWK ARENA.
