FCA beat Young Africans SC 2-1

An entertaining encounter at our training camp

First Team 20.07.2024, 17:59

On Saturday, FC Augsburg played the first of their two games held as part of the Mpumalanga Premier's International Cup in South Africa. Jess Thorup’s side beat Young Africans SC 2-1 at the Mbombela Stadium, which was one of the host venues for the 2010 World Cup.

Left-back Mads Pedersen opened the scoring just before half time with a left-footed effort into the corner after good work from Elvis Rexhbecaj (38’). Phillip Tietz made it 2-0 from a Masaya Okugawa assist (81’), before Young Africans hit back three minutes from time through Jean Baleke (87’).

FCA, who were playing in their white home shirt, started on the front foot and created a host of early opportunities, including through Elvis Rexhbecaj (4’),

Steve Mounié, whose header was cleared off the line (14’), and Rexhbecaj again, who fired just wide after good link-up play with Arne Engels. Young Africans, who are the current Tanzanian league champions, created two chances themselves before half time. They firstly struck the crossbar with a deflected effort from distance, before FCA goalkeeper Daniel Klein stood strong to keep out another long-range strike shortly afterwards (33’).

Okugawa sets up Tietz

Jess Thorup changed all eleven players at half time in order to give the squad as much playing time as possible. Both teams initially found it more difficult to create clear-cut chances. Niklas Dorsch and Arne Maier both came close from long-range efforts (72’, 75’). Phillip Tietz then headed just wide of the post (78’), but made no mistake a few minutes later when he turned home after excellent play from Masaya Okugawa. That wasn’t the end of the scoring though, as the Tanzanian side got themselves back in the game when Jean Baleke headed past young FCA goalkeeper Tobias Jäger.

FCA visit Mbombela again in a week’s time when they take on TS Galaxy at the latter’s home stadium. The match will again be streamed live on FCA TV.
